Celebrate the holidays with art, culture, and adventure at WA Museum

Across WA, our museums are packed with holiday activities that give kids a way to burn their energy, sharpen their minds, and ignite their imagination. Every Museum has its own mix of art, science and culture so families can choose what suits them best and make a day of it!

At the WA Museum Boola Bardip, kids can explore Nyoongar culture in Deadly Arts and Storytelling, by crafting sand art and message sticks while connecting with Country through stories.  Busy hands will enjoy creating handmade lanterns and jewellery in our Crafty Kids Workshop,  or string art masterpieces and bee hotels in Blockheads DIY. Over in Light Lab, kids can uncover the secrets of colour and light through playful experiments, while Print Lab explores the beauty and symbolism of traditional Chinese screen printing.

At the WA Maritime Museum, families can celebrate Italian culture with Viva l’Italia, featuring crafts, family tree activities, games, and lively Mambo Italiano dance moves. If that’s not enough, you can also learn how to Cook like a Nonna or explore intergenerational storytelling in the Memory Jars Workshop. There’s more fun to be had with Maritime Family Movies and Nearer to Nature: WA Marine Mammals, where kids discover whales, dolphins, and sea lions with marine experts.

At the WA Shipwrecks Museum, spices, ships, and the winds of fortune await. Did you know spices were once worth more than gold? At the Shipwrecks Museum, Trade Winds invites kids to become captains of Dutch VOC ships, navigating galleries to collect precious cargo from the Spice Islands. Decorate your own calico spice bag with stamps and colours, then take on the Great Trade Race challenge; can you seize the winds of fortune and deliver your bounty to port before your rivals?

At the Museum of Geraldton, families can drop in anytime tocrown themselves ruler of the reef with an Under the Sea Crown, or sink their teeth into Snapping Shark Papercraft. Kids will love exploring the We Like to Move It trail, matching creatures with their incredible adaptations, and the Coral Corner where they can watch their drawings swim across a digital reef. We might have the Super Pit and the world’s tallest bin, but in Goldfields’ Next Biggest Thing, we’re dreaming even bigger as kids design and build scale models of their own landmark ideas. Quirky, clever, or completely out-of-this-world, these creations could win a prize pack! For some vintage inspired fun, kids can create their very own colourful bags in our Tie Dye for Kids workshop and join the Rock and Roll Sock Hop to twist the afternoon away. At the Museum of the Great Southern, families will experiencea fiesta of colour and culture ,  as we celebrate the vibrant spirit of Mexico. Budding chefs will love Cocinar la comida!, a Mexican cooking workshop where they’ll make cheesy quesadillas, tangy guacamole, and festive piñata cupcakes, while the artists will enjoy creating vibrant mixed-media art in Frida’s ReflectionLittle ones can join the Mexican Playdate,  an early-years program filled with cultural stories, music, and creative play.  Please note that this school holidays, the Viva Mexico!
